Since opening on November 15, 2012, La Flor Bakery has welcomed customers from across Western New York with authentic Puerto Rican food, freshly baked pastries, homemade desserts, and friendly service.
Founded by Enrique Sexto Santiago, whose family is originally from Jayuya, Puerto Rico, La Flor Bakery has become one of Buffalo's best-known destinations for traditional Puerto Rican cuisine while remaining deeply connected to the neighborhood it proudly serves.
The name "La Flor" was inspired by the amapola, a flower from Puerto Rico. Today, the flower is featured throughout the bakery's logo and branding, reflecting the family's connection to their Puerto Rican heritage.
Today, customers visit not only for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts, but also for the familiar flavors that have remained unchanged since the bakery first opened.
A Family Business Inspired by Puerto Rico
The Sexto family opened La Flor Bakery with one goal: bringing authentic Puerto Rican cooking to Buffalo.
Originally from Jayuya, a mountain town in central Puerto Rico known for its rich traditions and culture, the family continues preparing the same recipes that customers first enjoyed when the bakery opened more than a decade ago.
According to the family, everything is prepared in-house, allowing each meal, pastry, and dessert to maintain the same flavors customers have come to expect since 2012.
Traditional Puerto Rican Cuisine Prepared Daily
Walking into La Flor Bakery, customers are greeted by staff at the counter where they can order traditional Puerto Rican favorites prepared fresh throughout the day.
Among the restaurant's most popular dishes are pernil, arroz con gandules, pollo asado, carne frita, bacalao, chuletas, yuca, mofongo, tostones, maduros, and pasteles.
When asked what represents a traditional Puerto Rican meal, the family immediately pointed to a plate of arroz con gandules, pernil, pasteles, and yuca—classic comfort foods enjoyed throughout Puerto Rico.
The Tripleta Jayuyana
Among the menu's signature creations is the Tripleta Jayuyana, a sandwich named after the family's hometown of Jayuya.
Inside customers will find:
Pernil
Chicken
Steak
A whole alcapurria
The unique combination has become one of La Flor Bakery's signature sandwiches and continues attracting customers looking for something they won't find just anywhere.
Inside the Bakery
While many customers visit for lunch or dinner, others stop in simply for the bakery.
Fresh pastries and breads are prepared throughout the day, giving guests plenty of traditional Puerto Rican bakery favorites to choose from.
Homemade Desserts
Among the bakery's most popular desserts are Tres Leches Cake and Quesitos, two longtime customer favorites.
Display cases are filled with a variety of traditional pastries, including Patas de Oso and many other Puerto Rican baked goods that have become staples for customers returning week after week.
To accompany dessert, many guests enjoy a refreshing Jugo de Parcha (Passion Fruit Juice), the bakery's most popular beverage.

Alongside its regular Puerto Rican menu, La Flor Bakery features rotating daily specialties available only on their designated day.

Serving Buffalo's Community
Since opening in 2012, La Flor Bakery has become much more than a restaurant.
The family regularly supports local churches, community organizations, and special events throughout the year while also providing catering for weddings, birthdays, graduations, family gatherings, and other celebrations.
Each year during Buffalo's Hispanic Heritage Parade, La Flor Bakery hosts live musical entertainment outside the restaurant, creating a festive gathering where visitors can enjoy authentic Puerto Rican food while celebrating the community together.
Looking Ahead
After more than a decade serving Buffalo, the family is preparing for its next chapter.
The family is currently preparing to open La Flor Bar & Restaurant at 987 Niagara Street, expanding their presence on Buffalo's West Side with a full-service dine-in restaurant.
Rather than duplicating the bakery, the new restaurant will introduce a full-service dine-in experience featuring an expanded menu of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, including a larger selection of seafood dishes.
The new concept will complement La Flor Bakery while allowing the family to share even more of Puerto Rico's culinary traditions with Western New York.
Why Customers Keep Coming Back
Ask the family why customers continue returning, and the answer is consistentency.
People come for the authentic flavor of the food, the homemade desserts, and the friendly service.
Many first-time visitors become regular customers, recommending La Flor Bakery to friends and family through word-of-mouth. That reputation, combined with authentic recipes that have remained unchanged since 2012, has helped make La Flor Bakery a longtime favorite on Buffalo's West Side.
