For nearly a decade, El Sazón Restaurant has welcomed customers to Lyell Avenue in Rochester with traditional Dominican cuisine prepared by the same family that first opened its doors.
Founded approximately nine years ago by José Ramos and his family, El Sazón remains a true family business. At the beginning of 2026, ownership transitioned to José's sons, brothers Luis Ramos and Chaniel Luis, while José continues working in the restaurant each day. The family also owns the building, allowing El Sazón to continue growing while remaining rooted in the same neighborhood.
When asked what makes El Sazón different, Luis answered simply:
"El nombre lo dice todo... El Sazón."
Rather than elaborate, he let the restaurant's food and nearly a decade of serving Rochester speak for themselves.
A Family Business Across Generations
Walking into El Sazón, it's immediately clear that family remains at the center of the restaurant.
José Ramos continues working alongside his sons, Luis Ramos and Chaniel Ramos, continuing the tradition that has guided the restaurant since it first opened. When asked what makes him most proud after nearly ten years, Luis didn't point to a particular accomplishment or menu item. Instead, he spoke about remaining a family business.
A Traditional Dominican Dining Experience
Inside, customers are welcomed by a serving line filled with freshly prepared Dominican dishes. Rather than simply ordering from a menu, guests can see many of the day's selections before choosing the combination of meats and sides they would like on their plate.
During the visit, customers stepped up to the serving counter, looked over the day's selection of meats and sides, and built their meals one plate at a time. The experience reflects a traditional Dominican style of service, where freshly prepared dishes are visible before customers make their selections.
Dominican Favorites Prepared Daily
Among El Sazón's most popular dishes are pernil (roasted pork), pollo horneado (roasted chicken), res guisada (stewed beef), and crispy chicharrón de cerdo. Combination plates featuring rice, beans, and one or more meats are among the restaurant's most requested meals.
The menu also includes Dominican favorites such as mangú, mofongo, empanadas, alcapurrias, fresh natural juices, seafood dishes, and soups prepared throughout the week.
On Saturdays, customers can also enjoy chivo (goat), one of the restaurant's traditional weekend specialties.
Watching fresh pernil being carved behind the serving counter offers a glimpse into one of El Sazón's signature dishes.
